That’s what I wanted as a child but didn’t have the words for it. These books give children a sense of belonging and validation. I was so intrigued that I finished the book in a weekend, a full month before the class. I remember it because even though I am not black, it was the only book with a person of color in the classroom. I remember one! It was called, “Tituba”, and it was about a black woman who was accused of being a witch. We didn’t read any books about people of color.
